Jamie Dornan fans were pretty busy this past Canada and Independence Day long weekends when their favourite serial killer attended the 51st Annual KVIFFEST in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.
Dornan was in attendance to support and present one of his upcoming films, Anthropoid. Based on a true story of 1942 Prague plagued by the rising of the Nazi Hierarchy, Dornan plays army-in-exile, Czechoslovakian soldier Jan Kubiš alongside Cillian Murphy, who plays his counterpart, Jozef Gabčík. The pair set out to assassinate SS Reinhard Heydrich, second in command to Adolf Hitler.
During the afternoon of July 1st, 2016, Dornan first met with fans and graciously signed a plethora of autographs and to take pictures. One fan recapped her experience on Facebook regarding the encounter she had with Jamie at KVIFF by saying “He’s sweet, adorable, very kind and quite the shy cute Jamie. He’s interested in how his fans are and grateful and happy when you ask him how Amelia and the girls are doing.” Proving once again that Jamie’s family means everything to him.
The film then had its international premier in Karlovy Vary, Prague on July 1st, 2016 where Dornan was indeed present. He presented the movie on the first day and attended a press conference for the film alongside Director Sean Ellis, multiple producers and fellow cast members.
The movie was first shown on July 1st, 2016 during the festival at which Dornan was present for and even introduced the movie prior to the screening. Dressed in a brilliant black suit and trademark bow tie, Dornan spoke highly regarding the importance of the film for the Czechoslovakian people. “We realized what an important story this is to Czechoslovakia and we felt that, you know, a huge amount of pressure to tell the story in an appropriate way and to honour the men involved, men and women involved, and I really hope we’ve done that. We’re very proud of the movie and I hope that we’ve done the country proud as well.” He also spoke multiple times about the changes an actor experiences doing period pieces as well as a film based on a true story and the level of difficulty in portraying someone who actually existed. “I’ve gone through a period where I’ve felt like I was playing people who were very much in control of what they were doing.” Dornan spoke regarding some of his current and past roles, wherein Jan Kubiš experiences a different level of control.
On July 2nd, 2016 Jamie attended the Press Conference portion of the festival in which he joined a panel of producers, fellow cast members and the director alike to answer questions regarding the film. Jamie spoke highly of Prague, his fellow comrades and his fans by saying “The Czech people have been brilliant. They were brilliant when we were announcing the movie last year, they’ve been brilliant. I felt that we got a really, sort of very, impassioned response (from the movie) last night and the Czech audience. I think that sort of thrilled all of us. I felt that I’m very warmed by the perception the movie’s got.” Jamie is also very good at keeping the limelight on the project he’s promoting. When asked about Fifty Shades of Grey, Dornan respectfully replied “I won’t talk about that project because I’m not here to talk about that project,” maintaining the focus on Anthropoid.
With a trailer already released, fans are more than excited to see Jamie in such a divergent role. We’ve seen him play everything from a sadomasochistic billionaire to a serial killer. And now he’s playing characters and pieces based off real life circumstances.
Jamie also has two other movies set to premier shortly. ‘The 9th Life of Louis Drax’, which got its trailer premier last week is set to debut on September 2nd in the US and September 9th in the UK. Jamie’s other project ‘The Siege of Jadotville’ a Netflix original also based on a true story, is set to premier on July 9th, 2016 at Galway Film Fleadh in Ireland. There is no official release date for Netflix yet nor a trailer at this time.
